I believe that if you have arthritis, you may have fluid retention caused through energy imbalances, as a consequence of dilated capillary membranes; which are a consequence of free radical chain reactions; which are a consequence of toxins circulating in your blood stream and a consequence of injury or stress.  The resultant flooding of connective tissue with blood plasma proteins, lymph fluid and sodium, prevents oxygen from the blood stream reaching individual cells.  They ache in protest and are no longer able to generate energy.  Lymph fluid forced into joints by osmotic pressure within the connective tissue cannot be compressed, so movement is restricted and difficult.  

Toxins in the fluid attack joint surfaces necessitating the body to attempt to envelope them in calcium, which it takes from bone.

You may have high uric acid levels in your blood stream as a result of your diet being high in meat, fat, sugar or citrus fruit (except lemons). Uric acid may complicate things by crystallizing, which in turn necessitates that your body does surround the crystals with fluid to protect nerve endings. This results in increased fluid retention.
